[7-12] Calm Room

Dear Parents,

I want to share a new opportunity for your student enrolled in grades 7-12 here at Taconic Hills CSD. Over the past few months, the staff have researched and created a Calm room for your students to utilize throughout the school day. The space is a refurbished office in the main office suite. The room provides a space for your child that may be experiencing some feelings of anxiousness, frustration, exhaustion, overwhelmed, etc. with soft lighting, mediation cushions, a basket chair, sensory items and a fake fish tank. There are instructional materials to assist your child with deep breathing exercises, yoga poses and guided meditation. We also have created a website link for students to access videos with the same purpose.

I have reviewed the guidelines over the past few days with your children in their physical education classes. The most important guideline is that students must sign in at the main office and hand in their phone while they are in the calm room for no longer than 10 minutes.

I hope you will join me in encouraging your child to visit the calm room and benefit from the reward of good health and mindfulness. The research shows our youth are more stressed out and have limited coping strategies to manage such stressors.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
