Introduction:
As an historian who has travelled back in time, you found a collection of drawings.  What are these drawings and what do they mean.  Could they have historical importance?  Do they really represent the opinions of the time? How can  you look at these and figure out what they mean? Yellow Journalism

Task:
PA War

 As a time traveller, you will have to decipher one of the drawings below.  To prove to your superiors that you know what you are doing, you will create your own drawing with a written explanation.

Procedure:
  1. Read the  "Quest" so you know what you will need to do!
  2. Look at the Cartoon Analysis Worksheet and use it to decipher your selected drawing.
  3. Use another worksheet to plan your drawing and to help you ensure it has meaning.
  4. Create your drawing.
  5. Write an explanation of your cartoon.
  6. Be ready to present your drawing to the class along with the explanation of what it means!
  7. Have FUN!

Conclusion:

Political cartoons are important historical documents that allow us to understand the political opinions of the times and those of the artists who produced them. Political cartoons are "editorials” (expressed opinions of editors or publishers) used to influence public opinion. They also allow us to identify the symbols used to represent the peoples of the countries affected by the war: the United States, Spain, Cuba, and others. Many of these symbols reflect long held attitudes and prejudice. Sometimes there are obvious messages portrayed by the cartoons; sometimes there are hidden messages.

This WebQuest was created as a collaboration between the Technology, ELA,  and Social Studies Departments at Taconic Hills Middle School.  The WebQuest was designed by Mrs. Ueland (Computer Technology Teacher, Lead Tech Facilitator) based upon a lesson plan from Mrs. Thornton  (MS Social Studies Teacher).

This WebQuest was created to be used in a secondary school classroom.  The topics covered are inline with  NYS ELA , NYS  Social Studies and Technology standards.
